A magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit Puerto Rico on Friday, which the Dominican Republic shares with Haiti. rattling residents but causing no immediate reports of damage.

U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Randy Baldwin said the tremor was not an aftershock of the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake that killed an estimated 300,000 people and left millions homeless in Haiti. The quake occurred at a depth of 64 miles south-southwest of the capital of San Juan.

It occurred on Christmas Eve just a couple of miles from the central mountain town of Aguas Buenas.

A Federal Aviation Administration official said the international airport in San Juan was open and operating normally.
